Feast of Christ the King
This past Sunday marked the last Sunday before Advent starts. This is the end of the church year. The readings and feast of this weekend reminded us to look ahead to the second coming of Jesus and prepare ourselves. The following of Jesus is not just saved for Sunday mornings, nor is it only for those who guide us in worship or teach our formation classes. By the very fact that we are baptized, we are all called to be priests, prophets and kings like Jesus. It may be hard to believe, but those are the bars God has given us to reach and we can do so with God’s grace.

What an amazing gift! And in advance of Thanksgiving in the United States, even our scriptures this weekend remind us to give great thanks! We may not have halos or wear religious habits, but simply by the fact that we are baptized, we are asked to live holiness everyday. That may seem intimidating, but truly, it is as simple as making the elements of this Discipleship CORE a priority – discover, follow, worship and share Jesus!

Remember your baptism
Thanksgiving in the United States is often a time when families gather and share memories. Consider asking about and sharing about your family’s baptisms. Dig out pictures, candles, baptismal gowns and remember the day that Christ claimed you. Celebrate! God is changing the world through each one of his priests, prophets and kings, including you! In remembering your baptism, identify one way that you are going to show the world this week that you are a follower of Jesus. Ideas include:

  • Give a gift to someone who needs it, but maybe doesn’t deserve it (like Jesus generously gave you)

  • Start a spiritual book like “The Interior Castle” or “Jesus Calling” (because our call to holiness means we need to learn about Jesus and the spiritual life)

  • Gather with a group of friends in faith, for Mass or brunch (because community is key to healthy discipleship)

  • Pay attention to those in need around you this week or schedule a time to serve your community (service is one way we show the world our friend Jesus)

  • Forgive someone or get to confession this week (forgiveness and mercy as well as humility are signs of our spiritual maturity!
